Happy Weekend

March 9, 2012

Beer and beach anyone? Yeah, that’s what I’m doing this weekend. Sorry people who live in cold weather.  (if you read this blog).

Birthday Month

March 7, 2012

March is literally THE birthday month of the year in my family. 4 birthdays in 31 days should be some sort of freakish family record in my opinion! Unfortunately, I live about 4 hours from the very special birthday peeps – but thankfully I’ll get to see them all at once in just over two weeks. 4 birthdays and a wedding – now that calls for a big-time celebration!!

Happy Birthday to my sister, Erica. Even though you have better hair and better legs than me, I still love you more than anything. (her birthday was March 1st)

Happy Birthday to my aunt, Les. The most confident, honest and coolest aunt out there – people truly do love us, don’t they? (her birthday is TODAY!!)

Happy Birthday to my dad, Fajha. You laugh at your own jokes and you think you’re ridiculously good-looking – and now I understand where I get that from. Thank you for everything that you have done and continue to do for me. (his birthday is March 13th)

And last but certainly not least, Happy Birthday to my grandma, Gram. Great things come in small packages – and my Gram is larger than life! (her birthday is March 18th)

I love you all and I can’t wait to see you for one massive celebration of love and life!

Bridal Showering

March 6, 2012

When my sister asked me to be her Maid of Honor, we gave each other a big hug and had a good cry. I was honored, but I was also scared. I have been a bridesmaid before, so my duty of being a bride’s wing-woman at a bachelorette party was easy – I am the best beer-holder, free shot-getter and mascara-checker out there. But being a Maid of Honor is different – you have to do like, important things – things like holding the bride’s dress while she pees, making sure the Hubs-to-be isn’t too drunk on the wedding day, telling the bride that neon pink platforms aren’t the newest bridal trend, planning the bridal shower…

I have never planned a bridal shower, and knowing my experience in planning parties – I was a little terrified. When I do something, I don’t want to half-ass it – especially when it comes to parties, especially my sister’s bridal shower. Thank God for Pinterest – it gives semi-creative people really good ideas, so a lot of the planning part was easy. I saw a pretty picture, I saved it on the Pinboard I created for the shower, and then tried to recreate it.

Naturally, everything came together at the last-minute (my sister was walking in as I pulled the last tray of food out of the oven), but everything went according to plan – the food was deelish, the games weren’t lame, and the drinks were a-flowing.

Her wedding is this month, and I can’t wait to celebrate. I’m so happy for you, Erica, and I hope you enjoy a lifetime of love, happiness, and unforgettable moments!

The idea here was to fill the room with white balloons. Either the room was too big, or I didn’t have enough balloons…

Save a space for the gifts and party favors – a bride will be excited to see all of the new goodies, and so will the guests!

I arranged the party favors in an “E” for Erica – can you see it? No?

These body sprays from Bath & Body Works were $1.25 each – and it’s a favor people will actually use! (and like!)

Finger foods and skewers – essentials for bridal showers. Fun and delicious. (see menu below)

Caprese kabobs – make a lot of these – they were the first to go.

Rainbow fruit skewers – the prettiest and the easiest.

Mini confetti cupcakes? Yes please!

A special gift from the Maid of Honor – I made this wreath for her to hang in her patio.

The Menu (many of these recipes can be found here)

  • Caprese Kabobs
  • Rainbow Fruit Skewers
  • Deviled Eggs
  • Mini Quiche
  • Ham & Cheese Crescent Roll-Ups
  • Assorted Cheese & Crackers
  • Mini Confetti Cupcakes
  • White-Girl Sangria (recipe here)

The Games

  • Lucky Picture Prize Game – Before the guests arrive, tape a picture of the bride to the bottom of a chair. Whoever is sitting in that chair at the end of the party, receives a prize.
  • “How Well Do You Know the Bride?” Prize Game (printable here)
  • “Wedding A-Z” Prize Game (printable here)
  • Advice From the Heart – Have guests write down their favorite relationship/marriage advice.
  • Wedding Night Preview – easily the best game of the night! Write down phrases said while the bride is opening her gifts. When she’s done, read her phrases aloud as what she’ll be saying on her Wedding Night. Sexual in nature and hilarious!!

The Favors

  • Mini body sprays (Bath & Body Works, on sale for $1.25 each)
  • Mini wine bottles for prize giveaway (4-pack for $6)

Adventures in Wedding Planning

February 17, 2012

This is officially my first post about our wedding, and it’s a doozy. Let me start by saying that if you thought planning a destination wedding would be easier and cheaper – you are wrong. Trying to plan a wedding (a small one, no less), from 10 hours away from the actual destination is turning into a headache, and it started with finding a venue.

We already have a venue in place (mind you, I haven’t seen it yet, so maybe I am a little nuts), and it seems to be perfect. It’s in the Keys, it’s a private residence and it’s free (for us, anyways). Before we officially got word that the venue was ours for the wedding, we went searching online for other potential venues in case this one was a no-go.

We specifically were looking for a private residence because we want the feeling of an intimate setting with a few close friends and family. We found one house that was beautiful – it had its own beach, the price was decent, it was large enough, and several reviews of the place revealed it was perfect for weddings – what else do you need?

So I emailed the guy – and his response was “sorry, no weddings.” Straight and to the point. I was like ok, don’t want to waste this guy’s time – so I moved on.

Fast forward several months later, and I’m seeing reviews, websites, pictures – of this same house that doesn’t allow weddings. So I emailed the guy again, asking if the policy changed and here’s how it all went down…

Innocent enough, right? I’m sure there a slight twinge of annoyance, but professional nevertheless.

Well, things escalated quickly after this simple inquiry.

(Start from the bottom.)

Is this real life?

Kevin Melilli of Southern Diversion, you just messed up big time. I happen to understand marketing, advertising, reviews, keywords, tags AND search engine optimization.

What’s lesson here, folks? Don’t mess with a bride planning her wedding – oh yeah, and one who happens to have a PUBLIC BLOG.

V-Day Musings

February 13, 2012

I’ll be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of Valentine’s Day. I never understood why for just one day of the year, it was deemed as the day to spread the love. Why not do it every day?

We’re just having a nice dinner at home. Our supermarket has king crabs on sale, because there’s just something about crab legs as big as hot dogs that pulls on my little heart-strings.

For the sake of  the holiday(?), I’ve compiled these Valentine-y images to get me you in the mood…

If this doesn’t set the mood, I don’t know what does.

80% of our time is spent on our back patio, and it’s no exception on V-Day.

Oh, Martha. You and your watercolor hearts are so cute!

Who knew there was such a thing as V-Day Chex Mix? Now I do, and now I love.

It’s hard to believe, but your dog will still love you even after putting him through this. That is what I call True Love.

Ok fine, maybe I will get in the spirit. I’ll use any excuse to eat Chocolate-Covered Strawberries
