Sponge Dockin’ It

June 13, 2011

We ventured out to Tarpon Springs on Saturday – it’s something ManFriend and I try to do at least once a month. We feel like we are in another country when we’re there, and it’s always fun to play tourists in a nearby town.This time, we had some friends accompany us and it made the trip that much more crazy interesting.

Tarpon Springs is known for being heavily populated by Greek families of all generations. The main street is full of small shops selling shell trivets, magnets, t-shirts and sponges. The sponge docks of Tarpon Springs is its main claim to fame. It’s crazy walking up and down the side of the docks, knowing men used to strap on those old diving suits and risk their lives to collect sponges. It kind of makes me feel bad when I use my shower loofah.

The best part though:  where there are Greek families, there is Greek food. Glorious, Greek food. We pretty much always get the same things (spanikopita, hummus and pita, gyro, chicken souvlaki, baklava and maybe some Greek vino), but I made a promise to myself to try something new next time. But this time, we had to get the usual. And of course I didn’t get any photos before the food was eaten. It was hot, we were hungry, and it’s just that damn good.

I was on my best shopping behavior and didn’t buy anything this time (since we’re trying to save up for another, short vacay), but I couldn’t resist to at least look. You never know, you might find a gem. Instead, I found some good cigars and crazy-looking puppets.

{Sponges are everywhere – and every single shop claims to be the best shop in town}

{Not your typical sponge}

{Typical starfish, though}

{Ugh, I so wanted to steal this hanging crab trap. Too bad I’m 6 feet too short and it’s illegal}

    Ahh, I want all of those starfish! The food sounds amazing too. I’ve been to the Louis Pappas in North Tampa, but I hear the OG one in Tarpon is even better :)
